IIT - PHY - 8th class - THERMAL EXPANSION OF LIQUIDS - AL& P

1) in cold countries ice layer forms on the surface of water in ponds or lakes  but under this ice layer the water will not change in to ice.l
2) in cold regions upper layer of pond is solid state ( ice) but under this layer is liquid state (water) only
3) when we heats the solid materials the expansion of solids can be observe  in length , area & volume of solids
4) when we heats the liquids , only volume expansion can be considered we can't measure linear or Arial expansion of liquid

We can not boil the liquid directly without container so the expansion of liquids by heating can be considered in two ways
   1) container expansion
   2) liquid expansion

To understand the expansion of liquid:
1) take one container having long neck and round bottom
2) Pour the water
3) First level of water marked as 'A'
4) now heat the container
5) initially the container will get influenced by the heat and expanded ( as solids will expands by heating)
6) as the container expands the liquid level will be decreased  , let mark it as 'B'
7) if heat increased further , now liquid and container both will effected by heat and expansion of liquid becomes more.
8) liquid expands more than the level 'A' let mark it as 'C'
9) visually it appears that the liquid expanded from 'A' to 'C' but actually it expanded from 'B' to 'C'
So the expansion is considered as two ways
           1) Real Expansion:
If we consider liquid expansion when heating the liquid without out container.
In figure Expansion of liquid from B to C
           2) Apparent Expansion: Ī³
The expansion of liquid apparently observed with considering the container expansion
(It is not possible to heat the liquid without container)
We can observe in figure from A to C.

Coefficient of Real Expansion:
Ratio of actual rise in liquid's volume per degree rise in temperature to its unit volume.

Coefficient of real expansion depends on :
                   1) initial volume of liquid
                   2) rise in temperature
                   3) nature of liquid
Coefficient of Apparent Expansion:
Ratio of apparent rise in liquid's volume per degree rise in temperature to its unit volume.
Coefficient of Apparent expansion depends on:
                  1) initial volume of liquid
                  2) rice in temperature
                  3) nature of liquid
                  4) natur of material of container
Coefficient of Apparent expansion can be determined by specific gravity bottle method
Relation between coefficient of real expansion & coefficient of Apparent expansion :
